Liturgical calendars began to be developed in Christianity around the fourth century, with the Western church calendar coming into full development in the medieval period.
The content of the Lutheran liturgical calendar, like the content of the liturgy itself, was the responsibility of territory in which the church was found. Thus, the order for Bach’s Saxony was different from those for the numerous other territories of the Holy Roman Empire, but despite their differences, the Lutheran calendars and liturgies maintained significant similarities between each other as well as the calendar of the Roman Catholic Church.
Throughout his life as a musician, Bach composed cantatas for sacred use. In Weimar, he was commissioned to compose one church cantata a month, and so, in the course of his nearly four years there, he was able to compose a cantata for most occasions of the liturgical year. As cantor in Leipzig, however, Bach was required to perform a cantata on most Sundays and church holidays of the liturgical year.
The following is the liturgical calendar observed by Bach while in Leipzig. For each occasion the prescribed epistle and gospel readings are listed first, followed by the Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis (BWV) number and German title for the cantatas composed by Bach for each event. The Passions for Good Friday are noted as well.
Advent
Advent was celebrated on the four Sundays before Christmas. In Leipzig, a cantata was performed only on the first Sunday because Advent was a season of abstinence. Cantatas listed for the other Sundays in Advent originated in locations other than Leipzig, mostly in Weimar.
